Global Study Shows Major Gap Between Expectations and Real-World Perimenopause Experience

A large international study published in the journal Menopause examined data from 17,494 people across 158 countries to compare what symptoms women expect during perimenopause with what they actually experience. Researchers found that common symptoms such as fatigue (95%), exhaustion (83%), irritability (80%), low mood (77%), and anxiety (75%) were reported far more frequently than hot flashes, which are traditionally emphasized. Many participants associated perimenopause mainly with hot flashes, despite far higher rates of other symptoms. The authors highlight how little is still understood about perimenopause and emphasize the need for better awareness, education, and care that reflects real lived experiences.
